German artist Gregor Hildebrandt’s (Bad Homburg,1974) paintings, sculptures and installations draw on music, cinema and underground cultures, arranging and combining visual elements of sound recordings and various recording media such as magnetic tapes, vinyl records or compact disks. Throughout his poetic work, infused with both sound and silence, Hildebrandt creates a wide range of subtly reflective compositions that invite the viewer to evolve in space and grasp the beauty of things past.

Although Hildebrandt’s work makes formal reference to Minimalism, the addition of a great number of subjective and autobiographical citations actually deliberately repudiates this strategy. For the artist, the cassette tape is an artistic medium, especially in its original function of storage, that fulfils an important function: it enables the artist to add a further “invisible” dimension to his pictures. Playing with perception in this way is a major characteristic of his work; the picture is completed in the head of the viewer.His works turn out to be complex montages, in which pictorial associations from different spheres combine and interpenetrate.

Hildebrandt employs the material of his every-day environment without aesthetic or theoretical inhibition and playfully links aspects of conceptual art and minimal art with his personal life and experience of pop culture (Wentrup gallery, 2023).

Las pinturas, esculturas e instalaciones del artista alemán Gregor Hildebrandt (Bad Homburg,1974) se inspiran en la música, el cine y las culturas underground, disponiendo y combinando elementos visuales de grabaciones sonoras y diversos soportes de grabación como cintas magnéticas, discos de vinilo o discos compactos. A lo largo de su poética obra, impregnada tanto de sonido como de silencio, Hildebrandt crea una amplia gama de composiciones sutilmente reflexivas que invitan al espectador a evolucionar en el espacio y captar la belleza de las cosas pasadas.

Aunque la obra de Hildebrandt hace referencia formal al Minimalismo, la adición de un gran número de citas subjetivas y autobiográficas en realidad repudia deliberadamente esta estrategia. Para el artista, la cinta de casete es un medio artístico, especialmente en su función original de almacenamiento, que cumple una importante función: permite al artista añadir otra dimensión “invisible” a sus imágenes. Jugar de este modo con la percepción es una de las principales características de su obra; el cuadro se completa en la cabeza del espectador.Sus obras resultan ser complejos montajes, en los que se combinan e interpenetran asociaciones pictóricas de diferentes ámbitos.

Hildebrandt emplea el material de su entorno cotidiano sin inhibiciones estéticas o teóricas y vincula lúdicamente aspectos del arte conceptual y el arte minimalista con su vida personal y su experiencia de la cultura pop (Galería Wentrup, 2023).
