The Unsettling Duality of the Apparent

… There are many ways to interpret the apparent. Plato revealed a system of archetypes that lead us to believe what we see on earth is merely a facade. This original, or Platonic prototype, exists somewhere in the universe, yet no one is certain where it is, or how it looks. In an effort to repress this existential anguish, we conjure up an image. Yet somehow this image is too suspicious … bearing a too strong resemblance to ourselves. Quantum physics has gone a step further trying to provide material evidence for this double absence. And so today we continue to drift, still concerned with the “hypo-of-the-thesis.” Neither the Quantum theory, nor the Platonic vision prevails and the mystery remains unresolved.

For as much as we desire to hang on to the nostalgia of indivisible units or monads, we remain heir to duality. This obstinacy brings a great deal of confusion, even psychological weathering. Much in the same way, Inti Hernandez’s Apparent goes beyond the idea of an optical illusion to propose an alternative way of perception; a carefully considered flexibility training could be the first step. His works propose an alternative approach for the viewer, paving the way towards a deeper understanding of the concept of appearance. Hernandez’s work transforms the ontologically abstract weight of the statement “everything is not quite as it seems” into “seeing things as they actually are”: as unbearably relative and seemingly contradictory as a closed room that becomes infinitely open or an art piece that is also an object with daily use.

These three bodies of works, Encounter Place (first variation), the sculpture series Sendero de vida and the sketches to build Openlucht Lokaal (where dialog flourishes), constitute and define the visual framework of an encounter that lightens the heavy and unveils the abstract. They embody endless possibilities of impossible encounters. From this moment on, opposites are also complementary. Are we able to embrace what we deserve? And, to deserve what is there to be given? This notion is not new; but refers to a future state yet to manifest, one that is essential, almost mandatory, necessary.

La Inquietante Dualidad de la Apariencia

… Hay muchas formas de entender lo aparente. Platón entrevió un sistema de arquetipos haciéndonos creer que lo que vemos en la tierra es sólo su fachada. El modelo original o prototipo ideal platónico se encuentra en alguna parte del universo, pero hasta ahora nadie sabe a ciencia cierta dónde está ni cómo es. Para reprimir esa angustia existencial inventamos una imagen sospechosa… se parece demasiado a nosotros mismos. La física cuántica ha ido más lejos intentando suministrar evidencia material sobre ese doble ausente. Todavía hoy seguimos a la deriva en la “hipo-de-la-tesis” ¡Ni platónicos ni cuánticos! El misterio sigue aún sin quebrar.

Por más que nos aferremos a la nostalgia de las mónadas indivisibles, somos herederos de la dualidad. Semejante obstinación lleva consigo una gran dosis de confusión y, por supuesto, su desgaste psicológico. En consecuencia, más allá del juego óptico, Inti Hernández propone en Aparente una vía de reconocimiento cuya primera etapa debe pasar por un sabio entrenamiento de la flexibilidad. Sus obras sugieren al espectador un ejercicio alternativo de acercamiento a la apariencia. En ellas aquel peso antológicamente abstracto del “no es todo lo que ves” se transforma en la necesidad de ver las cosas como son, insoportablemente relativas y tan aparentemente contradictorias como un espacio “cerrado” que deviene infinitamente abierto o una obra de arte que es también un objeto de uso cotidiano.

Los tres conjuntos, Lugar de Encuentro (versión primera), la serie de esculturas Sendero de vida y los estudios para la edificación de Openlucht Lokaal (donde el conocimiento florece), subscriben una pragmática visual del encuentro como voluntad de aligerar lo pesado y develar lo abstracto. En ellos se anticipan las infinitas posibilidades de encuentros imposibles. Desde aquí todo lo que se opone, al mismo tiempo, se complementa: ¿aprenderemos a recibir lo que merecemos o a merecer lo que hay que dar? Esto no es nada nuevo, es solamente un recordatorio del próximo update, imprescindible, casi obligatorio, necesario.

This wooden structure is one eighth of an amphitheatre that needs the mirrors on the inner walls to complete the reflection. As in life, only from the perspective of the viewer does the possibility of a meeting place emerge.

Encounter Place, first variation was possible thanks to the support of the Rijksakademie van Beldeende Kunsten in Amsterdam. This piece, presented during the 2006 annual Open Atelier, involves a multi faceted structure that functions both as a meeting point for people as well as a space for self-reflection. The Installation creates a metaphorical island of peace where somebody can see him/herself reflected or it can also function as a place that attract and enhances the presence of people.

This spiritual yet collective experience has become a strong point in Inti’s research into ideas encountered beauty and practicality; something that may well be constructed but that only reveals itself once people, organically start participating; something that may be personal but that does not exist in isolation.

Esta estructura de madera es un octavo de un anfiteatro que necesita de los espejos en las paredes internas para completar su reflexión. Como en la vida, sólo desde una adecuada perspectiva es que la posibilidad del lugar de encuentro aparece.

Lugar de Encuentro, variación primera ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de la Rijksakademie van Beldeende Kunsten en Ámsterdam. Esta obra, presentada en los Talleres Abiertos del año 2006, es una estructura de madera y espejos que funciona a la vez como punto de reunión colectivo, así como un espacio de reflexión personal. La instalación crea una isla metafórica de paz donde alguien puede verse reflejado, o también funciona como un lugar que atrae y realza la presencia de la gente.

Estos resultados que funden lo personal-espiritual y lo colectivo, lo bello y lo práctico se han convertido en punto de atención en la investigación de Inti Hernández. Con ellos se crean formas que no se revelan como contenido sin la participación de la gente; resultados que pueden tener un carácter personal pero no existen en aislamiento.
